Project Description

The main goal of the project is to develop innovative medical technology for rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 in biological samples using electrochemical biosensors. The project is part of the urgent epidemiological need – the construction of low-cost diagnostic devices allowing for sensitive and reliable diagnostics in the conditions of the need to obtain immediate results (so-called Point-of-Care).

Currently used devices do not provide adequate quality measurements (protein antigen diagnostics) under these conditions, or due to the high cost of analysis, they have limited application (diagnostics based on nucleic acid amplification).

Challenge & Solution

The project aims to expand the scope of research carried out by consortium members and to develop a biosensor cassette enabling highly sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigens and specific antibodies as well as the construction of a low-cost, single-use PCR measuring microsystem for detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The manufactured device will be used for diagnostics in non-laboratory conditions and belong to the group of in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) devices, also referred to as the Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostics. The conducted works will enable the development of a fully functioning device for quick and mobile diagnostics. Thanks to the developed technology, a diagnostic system will be created in the form of: (1) a microelectronic reader that will be used by doctors, nurses and paramedics in non-laboratory conditions, (2) disposable diagnostic cassettes used to detect SARS-CoV-2 virus using protein antigen determinations and antibodies ( 3) disposable diagnostic cassettes for detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus by means of isothermal conditions and genosensors (4) measurement data management system with associated infrastructure. In the longer term, the developed technology will be able to be used in patients’ self-monitoring.
