Project Description

The Emerging Printed Electronics Research Infrastructure (EMERGE) aims to create a strong community encompassing academia, RTOs, industry, and SMEs, addressing the challenges related to the value chain of flexible printed electronics and large-area photonics (FLAPEP). This includes the development of materials, process design and architecture, devices and systems, supported by characterization tools, research modeling, and simulation.

EMERGE will provide users working with materials such as paper, textiles, or biocompatible polymers access to FLAPEP technologies at a small scale and enable the integration of these technologies into their products. This will enable the development of new devices for multifunctional applications using industrially compatible hybrid printing processes (roll-to-roll, inkjet, nanoimprinting, aerosol jet printing, functional 3D printing, etc.) along with on-line control tools and automated high-throughput ink marking systems, both driven by a new knowledge repository based on artificial intelligence methods.

Challenge & Solution

The main goal of the project is to integrate new/innovative devices: hybrid thin-film transistors, printed electronics and circuits (biosensors, in-vitro diagnostic platforms, photovoltaics, nanogenerators, and energy carriers) on conformal, flexible substrates with non-planar surfaces using environmentally sustainable materials and processes for the development of innovative products.
EMERGE will focus on building a collaborative network among partners, industry stakeholders, and global FLAPEP initiatives. This includes supporting emerging communities, promoting and disseminating knowledge and data sharing. Actions are planned to ensure a long-lasting and sustainable community, fostering a durable partnership. This will enhance Europe's competitiveness in the medium and long term, ensuring sustainable development aligned with the goals of the Green Deal. The entire value chain will be environmentally friendly, enabling a circular economy for all, including the electronics sector.

Developed solutions will present a new quality in terms of conducting rehabilitation process thanks to small mass, high flexibility and wireless operation as well as low price. These attributes will allow monitoring of treatment of patients in the conditions of their undisturbed living, outside medical facility, at the same time adjusting recommendations to the current state and thus improving individual and system efficiency of the healthcare. Furthermore, with employment of printed electectronics technology, the final devices will be manufactured in large-scale processes, which will allow relatively low price and thereby make the solutions available for wide group of customers.
